The unique modelling capability described in the paper assisted the award of the £5m EPSRC Supergen Solar Hub (EP/J017361/1) to Loughborough. Nominated by her external examiner, Blackwell won First Prize and a cheque for £750 for the most outstanding PhD thesis in Computational Physics by the Institute of Physics in 2012. This is an annual prize and is sponsored jointly by AMEC, The Smith Institute, AWE and the Institute of Physics.
