Telenesia
Telenesia was the result of a research project themed around archive film and “glitch” - the work includes curation, collaboration, video installation and investigation into cultural memory. Materials are published and comprehensively documented via the URL http://www.telenesia.com, in addition, a catalogue has been produced in the form of an artist’s book.
The research element consists of creatively investigating the narrative potential of media archaeology within a fine art context – the central construct being the fictive world called “Telenesia”, which represents a geographical focus for broken communication networks. A series of original short films with sound design created in collaboration with a musician developed the tropes of scratch film and video. These 1-minute productions were exhibited in conjunction with bespoke software interactive designs that used analogue physical computing software patches created using Max MSP and Arduino Boards displayed within a sculptural video installation designed and created by the artist. The installation was exhibited at Quay Arts IOW, supported by an Arts Council England grant (£6000). It consisted of my video installation and my curation of work submitted by moving image artists working in glitch video, video art and experimental film across the EU (Rosa Menkman Netherlands, Anders Weberg Sweden and Ian Helliwell UK), in addition to my commissioning a new work by UK sound artist Jon Pigott.
The 22 I minute short films based on glitch Tarot created from imagery shot by Julian Konczak, editing by Jasmin B. Hirtl (Austria) and sound design by Natalia Data (Kulabuchova) featured at the One Minute Film & Video Festival Aarau 16th to 19th August 2012).
The Telenesia catalogue included contributions from Jussi Parikka, Reader in Media Archaeology Winchester School of Art, Dr Graham Coulter-Smith, Staffordshire University (author of Understanding Installation Art, Brumaria, Madrid) and Joanna Lee, academic and writer at Nottingham Trent University.
